Bayou Vista Garden Club holds February meeting
“What is a Rain Garden?” was the theme for Bayou Vista Garden Club’s February program.
Member Janice Verret gave a presentation and provided a handout on the purpose, installation and landscape of a rain garden using native plants. Members were also provided materials for making “seed” tape using the seeds of native plants — purple coneflower, butterfly weed and four o’clocks.
Environmental Awareness Chairman Kim Alcina displayed birdfeeders she created by upcycling plastic drink bottles, and metal and plastic dustpans.
Nancy Marcel, Wildlife Conservation chairman, discussed nuisance alligators. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries licenses a statewide network of nuisance alligator hunters (approximately 65 hunters). Some of the alligators are harvested and some are relocated.
The African violet was the horticulture specimen exhibited by Horticulture Chairman Jean Chauvin. Chauvin distributed handouts titled “How to Grow African Violets,” which included tips on maintenance.
Hostesses for the meeting were Alcina, Liz Domangue and Annita Blanco. A floral design, “A Little Romance,” was created by Blanco. The design included ruby-red carnations accented with leatherleaf fern and rosemary placed in red mercury-glass votive candle holders. The arrangements were displayed on a tiered candle holder.
Door prize winner was Liz Domangue.
The next club meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. March 9 at the Bayou Vista Community Center. New members are welcome to attend.
