Margo Racca, international master bromeliad judge and National Garden Club master gardening consultant, discussed the variety, culture and grooming of bromeliad for showing. The difference between epiphytes (air plants) and terrestrial species was explained with several exhibits displayed.
A handout was provided to each member on tropical plants which included information on Genus Tillandsia and bromeliad culture.
Each member was given a pineapple plant (Ananas comosus), a species of the bromeliad family. Racca also donated several bromeliad as door prizes.
Kim Alcina, environmental awareness chairman, displayed several creations using repurposed cake pans as planters. The “upcycled” exhibit included a stand made with painted cake pans, and a vase and bundt cake pan planters which were then filled with rosemary and aloe vera.
