St. Mary AARP holds July 6 meeting

On July 6, the St Mary AARP held its monthly meeting and dinner.
The cooking team of Floyd and Shirley Hymel, Carol Francis, Pat Fryou and Jimmy Couvillier prepared the meal of red beans and rice with sausage. Meal co-sponsors were Houma Orthopedic Clinic and Gary Duhon. Dr. Brett Casey with Houma Orthopedic Clinic gave an informative presentation on knee replacements. Duhon announced his candidacy for St Mary Parish council president.
Speakers also included Jill Ward and her associate with Walgreens. Members learned the importance of keeping up with vaccinations.
In St. Mary AARP business, member Helen Ross addressed the upcoming St Mary AARP election. She stressed the importance of members getting involved.
The makers of D.A.T. Sauce donated several cases of the bottle sauce to St. Mary AARP. Members in attendance were presented with complementary bottles.
Entertainment for the meeting was provided by Silver Dragon Taekwondo. Master Ray Rutledge and his group performed demonstrations of self-defense techniques. AARP members were also treated to a demonstration of board-breaking techniques.
The meet-the-board segment of the meeting featured Carroll Bertaut. Bertaut has been a board member for more than a year and is in charge of coordinating and organizing the Monday night monthly meals.
The next meeting on Aug. 3 will feature fried fish with white beans and rice.
