Baldwin hears of possible litigation in exec session

Baldwin’s mayor and alderman met in executive session with legal counsel Thursday to discuss potential litigation from an employee.
The details were not discussed, and the board agreed to hire special counsel to represent Baldwin after the session.
It was revealed during a discussion with an audience member that Baldwin has not secured workman’s compensation insurance for the last decade, but it is unclear if the matter of litigation is related to workman’s comp.
In other business, Alderwoman Margaret “Faye” Coleman said the regularly scheduled cleanup was postponed to a Saturday in November to be announced. She said the Christmas lighting ceremony is Dec. 3 and the lighting contest is Dec. 17.
Alderman Herbert “HB” Bell said efforts are continuing to let a local civic group utilize the old fire station as a recreation center for youth, to include not only recreational and educational activities.
The board also:
—Heard from Bubba Moreau, Moreau Auctions, with a proposal to auction surplus property owned by the town.
—Mayor Donna Lewis Lanceslin said water leaks have been “sprouting up all over” because they are very old, and the town is attempting to keep ahead of repairs as quickly as possible. She is also working on an automated calls system to alert customers when there is a disruption in service.
—Police Chief Harry Smith Jr. requested and was given approval for personnel changes, including Nancy Proctor, night dispatch; Corey Burgess, part-time officer; Kim Gibson, part-time officer; and the departure of Quentin Seals from the department.
—Halloween hours were set Saturday, Oct. 31, from 6-8 p.m.
