Bear killed in Berwick auto crash

A vehicle struck a black bear Wednesday night in Berwick, killing it, Berwick Police Chief James Richard said.
The accident occurred sometime after 7 p.m. Wednesday on Thorguson Road near the parish landfill, Richard said. Someone who saw the bear lying on the side of the road called police, Richard said. No injuries were reported as a result of the crash, Richard said.
Police called the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, which was supposed to remove the bear today, Richard said.
Ten to 12 black bears are hit by cars near U.S. 90 and killed each year in St. Mary Parish, Parish Bear Conflict Officer Catherine Siracusa said.
