Berwick council asks state for aid

Three capital outlay requests to the state were approved by the Berwick Town Council Tuesday requesting nearly $4.5 million to assist with improvements.
The requests are:
—$2.95 million to install a sewer collection system on Old Spanish Trail and La. 182.
—$1.35 million to overlay various streets throughout the town.
—$165,000 to improve deep gravity sewer lines on Fourth, Sixth, Texas, Francis and Utah streets.
The requests will be submitted to the state Division of Administration by Rep. Sam Jones, D-Franklin, for consideration in the upcoming budget year.
Also approved during the Tuesday council meeting was a resolution releasing a servitude and right-of-way on land about to be purchased by developer Fernand Privat of Privat General Contractors in Lafayette. He plans to develop a 16.2 acre tract of land into a subdivision adjacent to Renwick Subdivision.
The servitude is recorded in the St. Mary Parish Courthouse and runs through the property Privat wishes to develop. Mayor Louis Ratcliff said no one really knows why the servitude initially was created and that the town does not need it.
However, the council did receive a servitude from Berwick LLC that exists on the western boundary of the property Private is purchasing. It is for the purpose of draining water from the fields, Ratcliff said.
In other action, the council announced the Christmas lighting will be at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving night, Nov. 27, under the bridge near Town Hall.
