The Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department is undergoing renovations on its La. 182 central fire station.
The new facility, being constructed at an estimated cost of $376,000, is planned to house six fire trucks, according to Harold Driggers, Fire Protection District 7 chairman.
Acadiane’ Renovations Ltd. in Franklin is constructing the project, but Driggers said there is no timeframe for completion.
The cost of the building is supported by a $1.25 million bond issue approved in April 2012.
Approved by only 106 residents who turned out to vote, the issue re-appropriated the three mills residents paid for fire protection to pay for a second bonding issue.
At the time of the election, the department indicated the bonding issue was written for 20 years on the referendum, but the district’s intention is to pay it off in 15 years.
Driggers said one station in Bayou Vista holds two trucks. The others are housed in the current Central Fire Station which is “falling apart,” he said.
