Anthony Thibodeaux formally announced his candidacy to succeed the Honorable Judge Gerard Wattigny as District Court Judge.
His announcement follows.
Thibodeaux has over two decades of trial courtroom experience in St. Mary Parish. He will leverage his legal knowledge and personal familiarity of the parish to run a tough campaign to serve as judge for the people of St. Mary Parish.
Thibodeaux will not be running against Greg Aucoin of Morgan City, instead he will most likely be running against a candidate from Iberia Parish. Every registered voter from St. Mary, Iberia and St. Martin parishes will be able to vote for this judgeship on Nov. 4.
“I am excited about this opportunity to earn the trust and support of the voters in St. Mary Parish,” states Thibodeaux. “I have worked as an attorney my entire career in this community. I am running for judge because I believe I am the best choice for the people of St. Mary Parish.”
Thibodeaux has tried cases involving murder, manslaughter, illegal narcotics, vehicular homicide, burglary, sex crimes, armed robbery, child support, child visitation rights, abuse of police power, both employees and employers in workers’ compensation and sexual harassment suits, community property partitions and successions, and small claims to multi-million dollar lawsuits.
“I have done it all in my 23 years as a litigator. My prior experience is what has prepared me to be the judge the people of St. Mary Parish expect and deserve.”
Thibodeaux graduated from Southern University Law Center and earned an undergraduate degree from Northwestern State University. He served four years in the United States Air Force and four and one-half years as an officer in the Louisiana Army National Guard. Early on he learned the value of work and education from his widowed mother, who worked during the day and earned her college degree at night.
“We did not come from a perfect world,” Thibodeaux said reflecting on his childhood. “But, my mother taught me how to find solutions to problems. My father taught me to work hard. The military taught me to lead by example. These are the traits I will bring as your next judge.”
Thibodeaux has been active in the community coaching girls’ and boys’ teams in recreational sports leagues, as a supporter and volunteer for the Down Syndrome Association of Acadiana, member of the St. Mary Parish Chamber of Commerce, and past member of the Patterson/Berwick Rotary Club.
Thibodeaux has been married to Jill Fontenot for 34 years. They are the proud parents of three girls, Kristie, Lauren and Claire, all college graduates, and one son, Alex, a United States Marine.

The qualifying period is Aug. 20, 21 and 22.
Early voting is Oct. 21-28 (except Sunday) from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the Nov. 4 primary election.
Early voting for the Dec. 6 general election is Nov. 22-29 (except Sunday) from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Elections on the St. Mary Parish ballot include U.S. senator, U.S. representative, court of appeal judge, district judges, district attorney, school board member, justice of the peace, constables; Morgan City city court judge, Morgan City city court marshal; Patterson mayor, Patterson chief of police, Patterson council; Berwick mayor, Berwick council; Franklin city court judge, Franklin city court marshal; and Baldwin mayor, Baldwin chief of police and Baldwin aldermen.
