Canoes, kayaks available during Harvest Moon Fest

The Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge will have canoes and kayaks available for public use and offer a sneak peak at the newly developed Franklin Canal hiking trail during the Harvest Moon Festival on Oct. 31.
Information and directions to the canoeing and hiking areas will be available at a refuge booth located on Main Street in downtown Franklin, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Refuge staff will be present to assist visitors into canoes and provide useful information and demonstrations. Youth under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult and no children under the age of 5 will be placed in canoes.
The Franklin Canal hiking trail runs along the Franklin Canal for 1.5 miles and provides hikers an opportunity to view cypress, tupelo, and various oak trees. Migratory birds and small animals may also be viewed. Refuge staff will be available to assist hikers and provide several turtles and snakes for viewing.
