Fire displaces 2 families Saturday

Two families, including at least five children, lost their two-story home to a fire Saturday night.
Amelia Fire Chief Carl McAllister said his department received a report of the fire at 9:40 p.m. Saturday. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the home on Cynthia Street was fully involved.
Eight Amelia firefighters responded with one pumper truck, one support vehicle and one ladder truck. They received mutual aid from Morgan City and Berwick. Morgan City brought one pumper truck and eight personnel, while Berwick responded with two firefighters.
The home is deemed a complete loss, he said. McAllister believes the origin of the fire was on the second floor, but said the cause is undetermined because there was too much damage for firefighters to enter for an investigation. There is no further investigation being conducted by the fire marshal’s office because the cause is believed to be accidental, the chief said.
No injuries to the occupants or firefighters were reported. Personnel remained on scene until 2:05 a.m. Sunday.
The Red Cross has been contacted on behalf of the families, McAllister said.
Aucoin Elementary Principal Joe Stadalis said four of the children attend his school and the fifth attends Morgan City Junior High. The elementary school is in the process of putting together a drive to assist the families, he said.
