Franklin woman killed in Ricohoc wreck

A Franklin woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon after she failed to yield from a stop sign on La. 182 at U.S. 90.
Stephen Hammons, State Police Troop I spokesman, said that at 2 p.m., Shirley Landry, 83, of Franklin was driving a 2000 Dodge Stratus south on La. 182 at Ricohoc. A 2011 Toyota van, driven by Kelly Shepard, 42, of Tomball, Texas, was traveling west on U.S. 90 approaching La. 182.
After stopping at a two-way stop sign, Landry entered U.S. 90 within hazardous proximity to Shepard’s vehicle, Hammons said.
Shepard’s vehicle struck the left side of Landry’s vehicle, sending both vehicles into the median, according to police.
Landry, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish coroner.
Shepard, and his passenger, Renan Almendars, 37, of Houston, also were restrained. Both Shepard and Almendars were treated at Teche Regional Medical Center and later released, according to hospital spokeswoman Sabrina Roy.
It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash; however, routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis, Hammons stated.
The crash remains under investigation.
