Updated 10:34 p.m. Sheriff re-elected; Hanagriff will be new parish president

Incumbent St. Mary Sheriff Mark Hebert was able to hang on to avoid a runoff in his bid for re-election Saturday, and Parish Council member David Hanagriff easily won election as the new parish president, according to complete but unofficial returns.

With all 51 precincts reporting, Hebert drew 6,604 votes, or 51 percent, to avoid a runoff with Blaise Smith, who had 5,361, or 42 percent. Doug Perry had 953, or 7 percent.

Hanagriff got 7,117 votes, or 57 percent, to 5,419, or 43 percent for Gary Duhon.

The parishwide turnout was just less than 40 percent.

In St. Mary Parish Council races, according to complete but unofficial returns:

In District 1, Craig A. Mathews (818, or 44 percent) and Patrice Rodriguez Picard (611, or 33 percent) are headed for a Nov. 21 runoff.

In District 2, J Ina (1,094 or 61 percent) was the outright winner, beating Ella Hamilton (693, or 39 percent).

In District 3, Dale J. Rogers (33 percent, or 713) will meet Rodney P. Olander (29 percent, or 627) in a runoff.

In District 5, incumbent Ken Singleton was the winner with 827, or 65 percent, beating "Billy" Badeaux (441, or 35 percent).

Parish President Paul Naquin, who was term-limited, moves to the council with 59 percent of the vote, or 7,142, in District 9. Incumbent council member Steve Bierhorst had 7,834 votes, or 66 percent, in District 10.

In Berwick, voters renewed a $25 annual sewer treatment fee by a vote of 70 percent to 30 percent (755 to 320). But an 8.11-mill property tax renewal for Consolidated Gravity Drainage District No. 1 failed, 2,620 to 2,768, or 49 percent to 51 percent.
