Kiwanis Trivia night raises nearly $35,000

The Kiwanis Club of East St. Mary’s second annual Trivia Night raised nearly $35,000 to go toward the Adullam Household of Faith, St. Mary Parish schools, and St. Mary Council on Aging event co-chairwoman Casie Callais said.
About 500 people on 82 teams participated in the event, which was near the maximum capacity at the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium, Callais said. The Kiwanis Club’s goal is to enrich the lives of children in the community, and all the money stays within the community, Callais said. The East St. Mary chapter has 50 members.
The St. Mary Council on Aging has had a lot of its funding from the state cut so the Kiwanis Club decided to add the organization as a beneficiary of the event, she said.
The “Order of the Phoenix” team from L-H Printing answered 118 of 132 questions correctly and won the first place $600 prize.
“We had a lot of fun,” team member Andre Chauvin said. The team came in second place at last year’s trivia night.
Team member Doug DeGirolamo said he watches Jeopardy a lot. “I knew a lot of the movie songs,” DeGirolamo said. “I think we only missed one in that category.”
Chauvin knew most of the sports questions, DeGirolamo said. “We all knew a little something,” DeGirolamo said.
The team, whose other members included Greig Chauvin, Julia Chauvin and Scott Robison, plans to return next year to try to defend its title.
The second place team, Walgreens Pharmacy, won $300 with 117 correct answers. The third place team was Greg Adams’ team who answered 115 questions correctly.
The different categories covered festivals, Louisiana, movie theme songs, TV shows, presidents, and Christmas in addition to random questions.
The “Watts Happening?” team from Hattie Watts Elementary in Patterson defended its title in the schools challenge.
The Kiwanis Club will award funds raised from the event to parish schools for specific projects the schools approach the Kiwanis Club for assistance, Callais said.
Kiwanis Club members came up with all of the questions for the trivia night. Sponsors also helped raised money for the event, GameDay Pizza provided food for the night, and Déjà Vu provided music. “We plan to do this every year as long as we can,” Callais said.
