Naquin hired as liaison between New Iberia, sheriff

New Iberia’s mayor and council have hired former St. Mary Parish Sheriff David Naquin as liaison with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Department.
In 2004, the city did away with its police department due to financial issues and contracted with the sheriff for law enforcement. There had been another liaison, but that position was eliminated also due to budgets.
The mayor, Hilda Daigre Curry, cited complaints from residents about rising crime and lack of Iberia deputies patrolling the city.
Under the agreement, Naquin will be paid $4,000 per month through December. Curry’s term in office also ends at that time and she is term-limited.
The council extended the contract with the sheriff’s office until June 30 of next year.
