New school year starts smoothly in St. Mary

The transition back to school was a smooth one for St. Mary Parish students, parish officials say.
St. Mary Parish Schools Superintendent Lenny Armato visited several schools in the parish this morning.
Armato said school is “off to a good start. Everything seems positive.”
Usually there are a few “kinks” to work out on the first day of school, Armato said. Normally, the biggest issue on the first day of school is transportation making sure kids are where they are supposed to be for the bus to take them to school. However, this morning, school officials appeared to not have any issues with transportation, he said.
Armato expected to have student enrollment numbers by noon today.
Holy Cross Elementary in Morgan City also started school today for first-grade through sixth-grade. Pre-K and kindergarten students start school Aug. 17.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Traci Landry said, overall, the transition back to school was a smooth one. Deputies responded to a few minor traffic issues this morning relating to school starting back.
The Sheriff’s Office always places extra officers around schools during the school year, Landry said.

Central Catholic High in Morgan City starts class Monday, while Immanuel Christian School in Morgan City starts Wednesday with a half-day followed by a full day Thursday.
