Norwood anchors relay preliminary in gold medal effort

Morgan City High School alum Vernon Norwood helped Team USA on its way to a gold-medal winning finish in the 4x400-meter relay at the IAAF World Championships onSunday in Beijing, China.
While Norwood didn’t run in the finals, he ran the anchor leg in the preliminary round as Team USA advanced with a time of 2:58.13 to win the second of two heats. The time was the fastest among qualifiers.
In the finals, the quartet of David Verburg, Tony McQuay, Bryshon Nellum and LaShawn Merritt ran the relay, which captured the gold with a time of 2:57.82.
Trinidad and Tobago finished second at 2:58.20.
Norwood was joined in the prelims by Kyle Clemons, McQuay and Nellum on the relay.
The 4x400-meter relay concluded the competition at the event.
Earlier in the week, Norwood fell in the semifinals of the 400-meter run with a time of 45.07.
