Older workers honored with awards
When it came down to voting for the older worker Legacy of Achievement Award for 2014, a decision couldn’t be made between the three nominees.
So St. Mary Council on Aging honored all three.
The awards were presented by Executive Director Beverly Domengeaux at a luncheon Friday at Cypress Bayou Casino.
Idell Johnson was nominated by Teche Regional Medical Center CEO James P. “Butch” Frazier III.
She worked at the medical facility for 48 years in the food and nutritional services department. Frazier said Johnson has “truly been an extraordinary employee. Over the course of her years here at our facility she has always been punctual and dependable. She’s respected by everyone who knows her.”
Frazier said Johnson “is always cheerful and smiling. At 74 years old she inspires everyone around her…she is the mother of one son, who is deceased, and two daughters. She had the respect and admiration of her family as well as that of the community. Morgan City is a better place to live just because Idell lives here!”
Mayor Raymond Harris Jr. nominated Levy Boykin, an employee of the sewer department for the City of Franklin.
“Levy Boykin is originally from Houma,” Harris said. “He and his wife Rose have been married for nine years. They have seven children and 11 grandchildren. He has been a part of the City of Franklin for 18 years.”
Harris said Boykin’s supervisor and fellow employees call him “dependable, quiet, punctual and polite.”
Supervisor Dainae Prejean said, “If you need to get a job done, you ask Levy.”
“He is the epitome of what ‘Older Workers Week’ is all about,” Harris added. “Always there when you need them.”
The mayor also nominated Clarence Williams, who works in public works in Franklin. His wife Louise also works for the city at Broussard-Harris Recreation Center.
He has been with the city for 15 years and is “fun-loving and a dedicated employee with a quick wit and sense of humor,” Mayor Harris said.
Supervisor Belva Notto said of Williams, “He tries to keep everyone in line and he is able to accept criticism and admit when he is wrong. Also, he can be a character!”
Harris added that Williams also exemplifies the older worker by “living long, living well and providing younger workers with the wisdom of that living.”
Also Friday, “special honorees” were Geraldine Anderson, Irma Lee and Oneida Lewis.
