Teche Action Clinic’s Adeline Guienze 5K Run/Walk scheduled for Oct. 15 in city

Teche Action Clinic will again present the Adeline Guienze Breast Cancer Memorial Fund 5K Run/Walk Oct. 25 8 a.m. beginning in the St. Mary Parish Courthouse square.
Teche Action Clinic has established the Adeline Guienze Breast Cancer Memorial Fund as part of the annual 5K Fun Run/Walk event. The fund was established in memory of Adeline Guienze. Adeline succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 36 on December 7, 2005, after a lengthy battle with the disease. Guienze was employed with Teche Action Clinic for two years. Although, Adeline was employed at Teche Action Clinic for a short period of time she left a lasting impression of strength, courage, and dignity with those who knew her.
Teche Action Clinic has elected to dedicate the proceeds from the fund to its Women’s Health Program, which will pay for mammograms for women who fall within specific income guidelines and to support the program’s outreach and education initiatives centered on breast cancer awareness and education.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for women in America. The American Cancer Society (ACS) reported that there were 220,097 new cases of female invasive breast cancer during its latest report in 2011. Experts predict almost 41,000 deaths from the disease. There is no sure way to prevent breast cancer, but women can take measures to catch it early on when it’s easiest to treat and significantly reduce suffering and ultimately the loss of life. Mammography is an effective method in detecting breast changes that may be cancer, and can detect possible tumors years before a woman can feel an actual lump. Unfortunately, the fear of discovering breast cancer, and/or the lack of health insurance, information or transportation keeps many women from taking advantage of this important medical service.
Teche Action Clinic is working to get the community involved in raising awareness of this disease. Our goal is to make sure every mother, daughter, sister, aunt, wife and grandmother in the community knows that The Best Protection is Early Detection.
Join Teche Action Clinic in Supporting The Fight Against Breast Cancer by participating in the Teche Action Clinic’s 5K Fun Run/Walk-Adeline Guienze Breast Cancer Memorial Fund.
