Anthony Thibodeaux used strong showings in St. Mary and St. Martin parishes to secure a victory in the race for Division A judge in the 16th Judicial District Court.
Thibodeaux defeated Dean Wattigny 52.45 percent, 21,463 votes, to 47.55 percent, 19,458 votes. The division includes St. Mary, St. Martin and Iberia parishes.
Thibodeaux thanked everyone who supported him.
“We now have complete democracy in the 16th Judicial District,” Thibodeaux said.
The voters of the district are the “victors,” he said.
Thibodeaux, of St. Mary Parish, garnered 68 percent of the vote in St. Martin Parish and 60.9 percent of the vote in St. Mary Parish. In St. Mary Parish, Thibodeaux had 7,658 votes to Wattigny’s 4,912 votes. In St. Martin Parish, Thibodeaux won 8,689 votes to Wattigny’s 4,086 votes.
Wattigny won his home parish of Iberia getting about 67 percent of the vote in Iberia Parish. Wattigny had 10,460 votes in Iberia Parish to Thibodeaux’s 5,116 votes.
Thibodeaux will replace retiring judge Gerard Wattigny, the brother of Dean Wattigny, in Division A. “I’m still in disbelief,” Thibodeaux said of his victory. “I’m just kind of warming up to the idea that this actually happened.”
