In 2014, every story included in the top 10 has something to do with an emergency and often death.
JANADA ANSLUM: In early December 2014, Anslum’s police unit was struck from behind on U.S. 90. She was working at the city limits attempting to slow traffic in the westbound lanes leading up to a single-vehicle motorcycle accident. As of Dec. 29, 2014, Anslum was home recovering and receiving therapy. There is no timetable for her return to active duty. Her return to work will depend on doctors’ recommendations.
Other departments, such as the St. Mary Sheriff’s Office, have offered assistance to continue her instructional DARE classes in her absence to eliminate any lapse in that program for area schools. She hopes to return to her duties soon.
BAYOU VISTA HOTEL SHOOTING: In April 2014, a 26-year-old woman was shot in the face at the Plantation Inn by Vernon Singleton, 36, of Morgan City who then turned the gun on himself. The woman, from Bayou L’Ourse, survived.
FATAL WRECK HAUNTS OFFICER: Patterson police officer Kevin Kinslow was the first officer on the scene of the February 2014 accident that claimed the lives of four members of the Cheatham and Escort families. The sports utility vehicle they were in lost control due to a blown-out tire and crashed into a school bus on U.S. 90 in Centerville.
BAYOU VISTA EMERGENCY CALL: Investigation into the November 2014 death of a woman at Phoenix International was ultimately ruled a suicide. Deputies responded to a report of shots being fired at the Bayou Vista company.
SUICIDE ON LA. 182 BRIDGE: A woman found dead on the La. 182 bridge in September 2014 is believed to have died by her own hand. Police responded to an early morning call about the woman who was either passed out or sleeping on the sidewalk of the bridge.
CHIEF TRAVIS CROUCH DIES: Morgan City Police Chief Travis Crouch was found dead in a hotel room at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Miss., on Jan. 31, 2014, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove ruled Crouch’s death a suicide.
BROTHERS KILLED IN CRASH: Brothers Todd Ponville and Troy Ponville were killed when the Corvette they were in left La. 70 and struck several trees in October 2014. The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to navigate a curve. Both unrestrained occupants were ejected.
SEVEN CHARGED IN INMATE BEATING: Seven inmates in the St. Mary Law Enforcement Center were charged with second degree battery for beating another inmate in the dorms in August 2014. The 46-year-old male had injuries to his head and face.
BAYOU VISTA BANK ROBBED: The April 2014 robbery of M C Bank in Bayou Vista was followed quickly by the suspect’s apprehension. Robbery suspect Barry Paul Gilmore, 53, of Patterson, was captured at the Waffle House on La. 182 in Morgan City two days later.
INMATE DIES IN JAIL: In October 2014, the St. Mary Sheriff’s Department reported an inmate death at the St. Mary Law Enforcement Center. Foul play was not suspected, police said.
