UPDATED: Two men injured in welding accident
One man sustained moderate injuries and another man had minor injuries after the boat they were welding exploded Thursday at a Morgan City business, according to Morgan City Police.
At 1:49 p.m. Thursday, the Morgan City Police Department responded to an explosion at the 7200 block of La. 182 in Morgan City.
Emergency workers responded to that location and learned that two workers at Sportsman Fabrication had been involved in an accident while constructing a vessel at the business, police said. The workers were welding on a boat when the explosion occurred, police said.
One victim, Casey St. Romain, 40, of Morgan City, received moderate injuries as a result of the explosion and was transferred from the scene by an Acadian Ambulance Air-Med unit, police said. As of this morning, police did not know what hospital St. Romain was taken to.
A second victim, Lenny Acosta, 41, of Berwick, received minor injuries, but wasn’t transported to the hospital, police said.
The Morgan City Police Detective Division and Morgan City Fire Department are still investigating the accident, police said.
As of this morning, investigators had not yet determined the cause of the explosion, police said.
