Following is the announcement from Herb Mashburn.
I, Herb Mashburn, am announcing my candidacy for the office of justice of the peace, Ward 8. Ward 8 encompasses all of Berwick and the eastern-most portion of Bayou Vista, those residences in the Berwick High School district. I have resided in the Tri-City area for 50-plus years and in Ward 8 for most of that time. Both of my children, Troy and Judi, graduated from Berwick High School. I have been a member of both the BHS Booster and Century clubs and presently support their Project Graduation program.
I proudly served my country as a United States Marine in the Vietnam War. While in the Marines, I met and married my wife of 47 years, the former Sheryl Susans. I also served my country as a soldier in the United States Army, stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas.
I have been involved with sports in the Tri-City area most of my life, from playing basketball, baseball and football as a kid and in high school, to being a coach, umpire and referee as an adult. I was a member of the Landry Banks Umpires Association for 30 years and served as assignment secretary for most of that time. I also coached youth baseball and was a referee for both basketball and flag football.
I have been a business owner in the Tri-City area since 1992 when I became co-owner of an oil field electronics business, but I worked as a salesman in the oil field for many years prior to that. I retired from that business in 2009. I am presently owner of M & L Fun Jumps, along with my son-in-law, Jason Lambert.
I served in the past on the board of the St. Mary Country Club for three terms, serving as president, vice president and chairman of the greens committee. I am presently an appointed member of the Berwick/Bayou Vista Water Works Board.
I am an active member of Pharr Chapel United Methodist Church, serving as an appointed member of the Staff Parish Relations Committee and as an usher. My wife, Sheryl, is also an active member of Pharr Chapel, serving in various volunteer capacities since her retirement this year from 20 years of employment at the Central Office School Board Complex in the Food Service, Child Nutrition Department.
If I am elected as justice of the peace, I will work diligently with the Berwick Police Department, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and the constable in Ward 8 to conduct the duties of my office to help make Ward 8 a safe, friendly place to reside. I love the Berwick/Bayou Vista area and would consider it an honor to serve as your justice of the peace.
