Police: Man killed while running across U.S. 90

A 39-year-old Franklin man was killed Wednesday night on U.S. 90 near Patterson after a pickup truck struck him while he ran across the highway, according to state police news release.
Shortly after 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a crash on U.S. 90 westbound near Patterson. The crash claimed the life of Samuel Mitchell, 39, of Franklin, the release stated.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Mitchell was walking on the south shoulder of U.S. 90 east, when a family member arrived and attempted to talk Mitchell into the vehicle, the release said.
Mitchell ran away from his family member and began to cross the westbound lanes of U.S. 90, when he was struck by a 2007 Dodge Pick-Up, operated by Wallace Mason, 83, of Belle Chase. The St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office arrived on scene and pronounced Mitchell dead, the release said. Mason was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was not injured, police said.
The St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office took toxicology samples were taken from Mitchell and submitted them for analysis, the release said. Mason voluntarily submitted to a chemical breath test and was not impaired, police said.
This crash remains under investigation.
