Mayor, two councilmen unopposed in election
Morgan City Mayor Frank “Boo” Grizzaffi and two city councilmen will be returned to office after qualifying without opposition.
Qualifying for the Nov. 8 election ended Friday.
“I’m honored to go unopposed,” Grizzaffi said.
It’s been “quite a while” since any mayor has gone unopposed in Morgan City, Grizzaffi said.
District 1 Councilman Tim Hymel and District 5 Councilman Louis Tamporello were unopposed as well. Hymel is in his second term, while Tamporello is in his third term.
In District 2, Dean Adams and Mark Stephens are running for the seat to be vacated by Barry Dufrene, who didn’t seek re-election. Dufrene is finishing his first term as a councilman.
In District 3, Joshua Loupe qualified to run against three-term Councilman Ron Bias, while, in District 4, Tommy Minton is running against one-term Councilman James Fontenot.
There were five candidates for mayor in the 2012 election, and Grizzaffi ended up defeating Lee Dragna that year in a run-off. Grizzaffi first ran for mayor in 2008 when he lost to Tim Matte, who served a total of four terms as mayor.
Coming into his first term as mayor in 2013, Grizzaffi said he promised to do his “very best” and plans to do that again during his second term. He has a plan for the next four years, even in the midst of a “down economy.”
Grizzaffi wants “to build on the quality of life” in Morgan City by improving infrastructure and recreational opportunities, while staying fiscally responsible.
Grizzaffi will continue to work toward bringing a new residential subdivision to Morgan City. He believes that a new subdivision will become a reality once the city’s levee improvements project is completed.
