Three injured after SUV rolls into ditch
Three women were treated for injuries Thursday, including at least one serious injury, after an SUV rolled and then ran into a ditch in the median of U.S. 90 to avoid striking another vehicle that ran a red light, Police Chief James Richard said.
At about 4 p.m. Thursday, Berwick police received a call reporting a crash at the intersection of U.S. 90 and Thorguson Drive. Authorities learned that a 2012 GMC allegedly ran a red light when a 2001 Chevy Blazer, which was traveling on U.S. 90 east, swerved to avoid hitting the GMC.
A Berwick police officer, who was at the red light when the crash occurred, saw the Chevy Blazer rolling in the roadway and come to rest on its tires in a ditch in the median of U.S. 90, Richard said.
The driver of the Chevy Blazer stated that the GMC crossed in front of the Blazer. The police officer reviewed his unit’s video camera and saw that the GMC had run a red light, which caused the Blazer to swerve to avoid hitting the GMC, flip and run into the ditch, Richard said.
The driver and another passenger in the Blazer were transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma, and a backseat passenger was airlifted with serious injuries to Our Lady of the Lake General Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, the police chief said.
The driver of the GMC, Agnes Smith, no age or address available, was cited for a red light violation, Richard said.
Police closed the left westbound lane on U.S. 90 for about an hour and also briefly shut down the right lane when Air Med arrived at the scene.
There were also two other crashes in the area shortly after the first wreck, Richard said. Berwick police worked one of the crashes, which was minor, and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office worked the other one.
