UPDATED: Congressman says Morganza Spillway will open Monday; Corps officials here say it's not certain

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin to open the Morganza Spillway Jan. 11, and the spillway will be "fully operational" by Jan. 13, U.S. Rep. Garret Graves, R-Baton Rouge, said in a Wednesday night Facebook post.
But at a hearing here this morning, Corps of Engineers officials say no decision has been finalized. That decision will be based on weather predictions and other factors.
Graves' post said that a meeting Wednesday night in Morganza, the Corps of Engineers announced that they will open the first Morganza gate Jan. 11 and that the spillway will be fully operational on Jan. 13 until approximately Jan. 21, Graves said. A flow of 140,000 cubic feet per second is expected at peak. By comparison, there was a flow of 600,000 cubic feet during the 2011 flood, Graves said.
The Atchafalaya River at Morgan City is projected to crest at 8.5 feet Jan. 23, but that crest doesn't take into account the opening of the Morganza Spillway, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
