MCHS Tigers upset Vandebilt Catholic, 4-1

We’re proud of the effort that these kids are putting out.

The Morgan City Tigers held off a late Vandebilt Catholic rally attempt and remained perfect in District 7-4A play with a 4-1 upset win Monday.
While the Tigers led 4-1 entering the top of the seventh inning, Vandebilt Catholic loaded the bases in the top of the seventh frame.
However, Morgan City pitcher Nick Spinella fanned three in the frame to escape any trouble.
Morgan City entered the game ranked No. 34 in the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings, while Vandebilt Catholic, a district powerhouse, was No. 18.
Morgan City coach Tim Hymel said the district season still is a young one and hopefully the squad will keep improving.
“We’re proud of the effort that these kids are putting out,” Hymel said. “They’re working hard. They’re learning to buy into the tradition of Morgan City baseball is about.”
Spinella earned the complete-game victory for the Tigers. In seven innings, he surrendered an unearned run on seven hits with two walks and fanned six.
Morgan City plated a run in the top of the first inning on Matt Lorenzo’s sacrifice fly to right field, while Brady Fryou drove home another run on a single to centerfield.
Morgan City added another run in the second inning on Spinella’s two-out single for a 3-0 advantage.
Vandebilt Catholic cut the deficit to two after plating a run on a single to centerfield, while Morgan City pushed its advantage back to three on Evan Stadalis’ double to deep center field.
Stadalis led the Tigers with a 3-for-3 performance with two doubles and an RBI, while Lorenzo was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Spinella and Fryou each were 1-for-3 with an RBI.
In junior varsity action, Morgan City defeated Vandebilt 7-4. The Tigers’ junior varsity squad is now 5-1 this season.
