Deputy kills man standing over mother with knife

HAMMOND (AP) — A Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man near Hammond in what started as a report of a domestic disturbance.
Michael C. Nichols Jr., 48, was found holding a knife and standing over his injured 70-year-old mother, Barbara J. Nichols, inside a home when deputies arrived about 12:35 p.m. Tuesday.
Louisiana State Police Trooper Greg Marchand says Michael Nichols was shot and killed. His mother was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her condition was not immediately known.
