Gray lifts Taco Bell to win
Bradley Gray connected on a single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Taco Bell to a 4-3 victory against Jester’s Court in Swampland League baseball action Thursday.
Gray’s hit, one of seven for Berwick High-based Taco Bell, won a game that had been tied at 3 since the fifth inning.
Gray finished the contest with a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI.
“This is the third game in a row that Bradley Gray has gotten the game-winning RBI,” Taco Bell coach Mike Thomas said.
Besides the game-winning run, all of the scoring took place in two innings as Taco Bell scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth before Jester’s Court responded with three in the top of the fifth.
Taco Bell’s pitching staff of Neal Theriot Jr. and Austin Price limited Jester’s Court to five hits and combined for 11 strikeouts.
Price earned the win in relief. In two innings, he surrendered a hit and fanned one.
Theriot started and went seven innings. He surrendered three runs —two earned — on four hits and struck out 10.
“Neal Theriot competed for (seven) strong innings, and Austin Price competed for (two) innings to get the win,” Thomas said.
Offensively, Theriot finished 2-for-3, while Cameron Wiley was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Brandon Fryou, 2-for-4.
In junior varsity action, Taco Bell fell 6-2.
Taco Bell (5-3) will return to action today when it hosts the Braves (H.L. Bourgeois) at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. While the game originally was supposed to be an away game for Taco Bell, it was moved to Berwick because of inclement field conditions, Thomas said.
Hutchinson tosses no-hitter in Skipper’s win
Skipper’s Sporting Goods’ Phillip Hutchinson recorded a no-hitter as Morgan City High School-based Skipper’s Sporting Goods defeated Covenant Christian-based Trinity Oil Tools 9-1 in Morgan City Thursday.
No individual statistics were available for Skipper’s (5-2). Skipper’s will return to action today when it plays at Synergy Bank (E.D. White). Junior varsity action will begin at 3:30 p.m. with varsity to follow at 5:30 p.m.
Halimar defeats
the Mustangs
Halimar Shipyard overcame five errors and six walks to defeat the Mustangs 12-7 in Swampland League action Thursday in Amelia.
Halimar (Central Catholic) had to rally from a 4-0 deficit to the Mustangs (Assumption) after the visitors jumped out to a 4-0 lead, plating two runs each in the second and third innings.
Halimar tied the contest in the bottom of the third inning with four runs and took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
After the Mustangs tied the contest at 6 in the top of the fifth, Halimar plated six runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 12-6 advantage.
The Mustangs plated their final run in the top of the seventh.
Halimar outhit the Mustangs 13-9 in the win, including six doubles and a triple.
Matthew Barbier and Samuel Guarisco led Halimar at the plate.
Barbier finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, four RBIs and a run, while Samuel Guarisco was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs, a stolen base and two runs.
Other contributors for the Eagles were Sage Thibodeaux, 2-for-4, a double, two RBIs and a run; Gregory Leger Jr., 1-for-3, a double, two RBIs and a run; Charlie Barron, 1-for-2, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs; Patrick Barron, 1-for-4, a double and a run; Tony Pennison, 1-for-2, a run; and Mitchell Lemoine, 1-for-4.
Charlie Barron earned the win. In five innings, he surrendered six runs — two earned — on seven hits with six walks and fanned three.
In two innings of relief, Lemoine surrendered an unearned run on two hits with one walk and fanned five.
Halimar (6-2) will return to action today when it travels to face Frank’s Agency (Patterson). Junior varsity action is set for a 5 p.m. start with varsity to follow at 7 p.m.
Big inning dooms
Frank’s Agency in 12-8 loss
South Louisiana Bank (South Terrebonne) plated nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to turn an 8-3 deficit into an eventual 12-8 win against Frank’s Agency during Swampland baseball action in Bourg Thursday.
Jake Lagrange suffered the loss for Frank’s Agency (1-8).
Offensively, Kenny Singleton Jr. finished with four hits, including two doubles, while Brennan Gouaux had a single and a double and Jake Lagrange and Sirbatian Charles, a double apiece.
Frank’s Agency will return to action today when it hosts Halimar Shipyard.
