Mosquito awareness

Mosquitos are the most deadly animal on the face of the earth, killing about 725,000 people per year, Morgan City Public Works Superintendent Jean Paul Bourg said in a news release.
Bourg submitted information about mosquitos for each day this week.
The majority of these deaths are caused from malaria, killing about 600,000 people per year. The main vector of malaria is the Anopheles mosquito, Bourg said.
Other potentially deadly diseases mosquitos transmit are dengue fever, yellow fever, and encephalitis, he said. Due to the diseases mosquitos can carry, the U.S. has the most sophisticated mosquito control programs in the world, he said.
