ULL is ahead of schedule as Two-A-Days continue
The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns hit the field for a pair of workouts Wednesday, holding a morning practice in full gear before returning in the afternoon with a workout in helmets.
Louisiana-Lafayette, which opens the season Aug. 30 against Southern, held a 30-play situational scrimmage in the morning workout before working on all situations in the evening.
“We’ve had a great camp, especially in the first week and a couple of days,” ULL head coach Mark Hudspeth said in a news release. “The last two days, maybe the intensity has dropped off a little, so we tried to rev them back up and they responded. They’re working hard, but they’ve got to push through those dog days of two-a-days. I think we’re doing that. We’ve got some good leadership, we’ve got a lot of time left to work and we’re ahead of schedule.”
One of the remaining battles in the starting lineup will be at inside linebacker where returning letter winners Trae Johnson, Kevin Fouquier and Chris Hill, along with transfer Trey Granier, are competing for a pair of spots.
“All of those guys are fighting for playing time,” Hudspeth said in a news release. “All are really talented, so we’re going to have to make some decisions on the field. Other than that, most positions are pretty much filled and we feel like we have quality depth … more than we had last year, so we’re making good progress.”
Hudspeth credited the daily competition at both wide receiver and the secondary. Led by returning letter winners Jamal Robinson and James Butler, the Ragin’ Cajuns return three of their top four receivers.
The secondary, paced by Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference selection Trevence Patt, returns all four starters from a defensive unit that tied for the league lead with 14 interceptions.
“They’re improving and making each other better every day,” Hudspeth said in the release. “They’re making plays on both sides of the ball and that’s we want to see them doing … competing.”
Louisiana-Lafayette returns to action today with a single workout before resuming two-a-days Friday.
The Ragin’ Cajuns will hold their second scrimmage of fall camp Saturday at Cajun Field.
