Plans for new Berwick subdivision progressing

Plans are moving forward to start a new residential development next to Renwick Subdivision after the council approved holding a public hearing regarding the purchase of land at October’s council meeting.
At Tuesday’s council meeting, the council accepted the planning and zoning committee’s recommendation to hold a public hearing in October to discuss preliminary approval of a developer’s request to purchase land near Renwick Subdivision in order to create a new development.
The planning and zoning committee met last week to address an application by developer Fernand Privat of Privat General Contractors in Lafayette, who requested preliminary approval to purchase 18 acres to create a residential development to the west of Renwick Subdivision, Planning and Zoning Director Gary Beadle said. All the lots will be single-family, residential lots, Beadle said.
The subdivision is estimated to include at least 50 lots, and the exact number and dimensions of the lots will be determined in the engineering phase of the project, Councilman Greg Roussel said in an email.
In other business, the council:
—Approved the city’s 2014-15 budget totaling $6.6 million.
—Approved the city’s amended 2013-14 budget.
—Approved $1,500 to help repair a children’s’ building at Chez Hope.
—Approved the town employees’ holiday schedule for 2014-15.
—Approved the Police Department to hold its Night Out Against Crime Oct. 7 with a parade starting at 5 p.m. followed by a festival at the intersection of Fifth and Ninth streets.
—Heard plans for “Celebrating Life & Celebrating Light” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 25 under the U.S. 90 bridge and at the Southwest Reef Lighthouse.
—Approved a parade permit for the Berwick High School Homecoming Parade Sept. 25.
—Heard plans for the Tour du Teche to be held Oct. 5 with a car show, petting zoo, a band, and arts and crafts booths among the attractions at the event.
—Heard plans for the St. Mary Council on Aging’s annual meeting from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Patterson Area Civic Center.
