Tigers to face Central -- Baton Rouge
Morgan City High School will hit the road to face Class 5A Central of Baton Rouge Friday.
The Tigers enter the game coming off a 50-28 loss to White Castle in a game in which Morgan City rallied to take a 28-24 lead in the third quarter.
However, White Castle responded with the next 26 points for the win.
Morgan City surrendered 493 total yards in the win, including 395 on the ground.
Morgan City coach Scott Tregle said his team missed too many tackles in the contest. He said the squad has worked on tackles in practice.
“I think we played hard, but we’re hitting too high and those backs are really hard to tackle,” Tregle said. “Offensively, I think we’re going to throw the ball a little bit more.”
Tregle said his squad was on the field too long in its Week 1 game.
He said his squad is working to force stops and get the ball back for its offense, something he said his squad didn’t do well Friday.
Offensively, Morgan City was led by Kevon Marsh, Jaylen Jones and Hector Tolento. Marsh rushed 21 times for 103 yards and scored once, while Tolento had a rushing touchdown and tossed another, a 22-yard pass to Jones. Jones also rushed for 44 yards and an additional score.
As for Central, the two schools met a year ago with the Wildcats rolling past the Tigers.
Skill wise, Tregle said he didn’t think this year’s Central squad was better than White Castle.
However, Tregle said that the Wildcats have more depth and he noted that none of their linemen play on both sides of the football.
The squad features LSU-commitment safety Kevin Henry, who also plays running back, as well as wide receiver Terrell Chatham, a University of Miami commitment.
“They have some talent,” Tregle said.
Defensively, Central plays the same scheme as Morgan City, lining up in a 4-4-3 look. They feature cover 3 as well as cover 1.
“We got a good look at it,” Tregle said of this week’s practice. “Just personnel wise, we’re going to see how good we match up with them.”
Tregle called Central a “blue collar team.”
He said they block on the line and the defense moves to the ball.
“They play sound defense,” he said.
Offensively, Tregle said Central runs a spread offense with plenty of inside running. He said they also like to utilize bubble and out routes in the pass game.
“They’ll go deep every now and then but they don’t like doing it,” he said.
He said Central’s stats don’t “jump out at you” because the Wildcats distribute the pigskin a lot.
“Like I try to tell our kids, it’s not about the stats,” he said. “It’s about how good you are and how good a team that you are and how good you can make your team.”
Friday’s game is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Central.
