Morgan City High School will be looking to get back to its winning ways when it travels to face Franklin Friday in a 7 p.m. contest.
The Tigers, who two weeks ago snapped a 17-game losing streak with a victory against West St. Mary, fell to Class 3A Livonia 56-27 a week ago.
While Morgan City responded immediately to Livonia’s first score of the night with a long kickoff return by Jaylen Jones and Irving Delgado’s extra point to take a 7-6 lead with 8:37 remaining in the game, Livonia got on track with six more first-half touchdowns — five of those by running back Malcolm Dedrick — to take a 49-14 advantage into halftime.
Defensively, Livonia shut down Morgan City’s running attack, limiting the Tigers to just 28 yards on the ground.
However, the Tigers, mainly in the second half, were able to make some strides in their pass game as backup Abram Hartley, who played the majority of the game for the Tigers at quarterback, completed 11 of 16 passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns.
Hartley completed second-half touchdown throws to Kevon Marsh covering six yards and Jacolbi Francois from 19 yards out.
He also caught a 26-yard pass from Jones on a trick play in the second quarter.
Marsh leads the Tigers’ ground attack this season with 49 carries for 335 yards and four touchdowns, while Francois also has rushed 42 times for 160 yards.
Through the air, Hector Tolento leads Morgan City with 154 yards passing. He has completed 7 of 17 passes with three touchdowns and one interception.
Hartley also has completed 12 of 18 passes for 111 yards and two scores.
Jaylen Jones leads Morgan City’s receivers with nine catches for 189 yards and three scores.
Franklin enters Friday’s contest 0-4, having dropped a 21-20 decision to Erath a week ago.
Elijah Mitchell rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries for Erath.
Franklin led twice in the game before surrendering the lead for good on Mitchell’s 3-yard run for the 21-20 final.
Offensively, Franklin was held out the end zone in the fourth quarter by Erath’s defense.
Franklin scored all of its points Friday in the second quarter via two David Kinchen touchdown passes, while Charles Webb returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Kinchen’s touchdown passes were 29 yards to Allen Randle and 76 yards to De’Andre Charles.
Penalties and turnovers hurt the Hornets in Friday’s contest.
Morgan City coach Scott Tregle was not available for comment this morning.
