Canty announces candidacy for Ward 8 justice of the peace

I would like to take this time to announce my candidacy for the Ward 8 justice of the peace seat.
I am Shawn Canty. I am 50 years old and I’m a lifelong resident of Berwick. I am the son of the late George Canty Jr. My mother is Una “Chute” Fabre Bruney, of Berwick. I am married to Tammy Fowler, of Bayou Vista, and we are the proud parents of five wonderful children, Vivian (Nichole), 25, Sean, 22, Nicholas, 19, Seth, 13, and Tarrin, 7. My family and I are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. I am a 1982 graduate of Berwick High School.
With a sincere interest in Ward 8 and its citizens, I have offered myself as a candidate for justice of the peace. I have one simple goal in mind: I want to make our community the best place it can be. I want to put my experience to work for you.
At a young age I was blessed by the citizens of Ward 8 and elected to be constable. I held this position for two and a half terms. I also served as a St. Mary Parish reserve deputy for several years. I am a member of the Louisiana Justice of the Peace and Constables Association and I have graduated several attorney general conferences for JPs and constables. I am a past 14-year member of the Berwick Volunteer Fire Department and served two years on the board of directors.
The JP’s position is a position that is very demanding. I will be available at all times, night or day. I have been in touch with other candidates across the parish and I intend on starting a St. Mary Parish JP and constable association that will hold monthly meetings that will be open to the public. This way we can keep all the citizens abreast of what is taking place with the offices entrusted to us.
I have also laid the ground work to start a litter abatement program. The Louisiana Legislature has given all JPs and constables parish wide jurisdiction on litter control. This would be a very useful tool in keeping our parish clean.
I want to see the JPs office be the position it was created to be and not just a supplement to retirement. I will always be available to assist other officials if called upon to do so.
Seven years ago I was blessed with my youngest daughter Tarrin “Tootie,” who was born with half a heart. Through the grace of God and the prayers from friends and family, along with the surgeons at Children’s Hospital, her life was saved and she is doing great. I feel I owe a debt of gratitude to the place that saved my baby’s life. I plan to set up an account for Children’s Hospital and donate the salary from the JP’s job to Children’s Hospital for pediatric heart care.
For two and a half terms I worked hand and hand with four JPs and was taught a lot. I know the job well and understand the duties of a JP. I will carry out the duties of the JP given by the Legislature and only the duties bestowed by law. I have demonstrated the willingness to devote the time required to fulfill the duties of this office. I would like the opportunity to put my ideas and energy to work for you. I will be hard-working, independent, and available at all times night or day my door will be open.

Early voting is Oct. 21-28 (except Sunday) from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the Nov. 4 primary election.
Early voting for the Dec. 6 general election is Nov. 22-29 (except Sunday) from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Elections on the St. Mary Parish ballot include U.S. senator, U.S. representative, court of appeal judge, district judges, district attorney, school board member, justice of the peace, constables; Morgan City city court judge, Morgan City city court marshal; Patterson mayor, Patterson chief of police, Patterson council; Berwick mayor, Berwick council; Franklin city court judge, Franklin city court marshal; and Baldwin mayor, Baldwin chief of police and Baldwin aldermen.
