Candidate disqualified
in 16th Distirct court race
NEW IBERIA (AP) — A state judge Friday ordered 16th District judicial candidate Carolyn Deal to withdraw from an election that currently is underway in early voting.
District Judge Keith Comeaux sided with Assistant District Attorney Chester Cedars, who argued Deal had not been an attorney for the constitutionally required eight years before qualifying to run for judge on Aug. 21.
Records show Deal was admitted to the Louisiana Bar in October 2007, short of the time required under the Louisiana Constitution mandates.
Deal says she plans to appeal the decision.
The 16th Judicial District covers Iberia, St. Martin and St. Mary parishes.
With Deal’s disqualification, two candidates remain in the race.

Fan dies in stands
at LSU’s Tiger Stadium
BATON ROUGE (AP) — LSU officials say a man has died of a heart attack at Tiger Stadium during the school’s 10-7 victory over Mississippi on Saturday night.
Officials said emergency medical personnel responded, but were unable to resuscitate the man.
The man was sitting in the lower bowl of the south end zone when the health emergency happened.
Officials have not released the man’s identity.
The victim was part of a Tiger Stadium record-tying crowd of 102,321.
The game’s result was in doubt until LSU safety Ronald Martin’s interception of Mississippi quarterback Bo Wallace on the 1 with 2 seconds left.

Man suspected in wife’s death, arson, found dead
GREENSBURG (AP) — The Louisiana Fire Marshal’s Office says a Greensburg man suspected of killing his wife and torching their house has been found dead in his wife’s car.
Deputy Chief Brant Thompson said Sunday that a note was found with 48-year-old Adren Allen’s body and investigators believe he killed himself. Thompson won’t talk about what was written or the likely cause of death.
Thompson says Marsha Allen’s body was found in their charred house on Oct. 11, but an autopsy showed that she had died hours before the fire.
He says Allen told investigators he’d left home just before the fire but investigators found that he was there when the fire was just starting.
Thompson says a tipster told investigators that Allen was at a camp in rural St. Helena Parish.

Oil group hosting job fair Wednesday in Lafayette
LAFAYETTE (AP) — The Louisiana Gulf Coast Oil Exposition is hosting a job fair Wednesday at the Cajundome & Convention Center from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. for oil and gas industry companies looking for qualified employees.
Military veterans will get special attention in the form of access to career experts from 8:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. and then interviews with company human resources officials.
LAGCOE, an oil and gas industry nonprofit organization, holds an exhibition every two year. The job fair is held yearly.
Angela Cring, the group’s executive director, says the goal is to provide the industry with an outlet for recruiting and facilitate networking between existing and future professionals.

Teenager commits suicide
in Iberia Parish Jail
NEW IBERIA (AP) — Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal says a teenage inmate committed suicide in a parish jail cell.
Ackal said the inmate, a 16-year-old boy, was found hanged in his cell after a routine check at about 11:53 p.m. Saturday.
The sheriff says the inmate was taken to a hospital by Acadian Ambulance but was later pronounced dead by medical staff.
The teenager was held in the Iberia Parish Jail after being indicted Sept. 4 by an Iberia Parish grand jury for rape. He was to be tried as an adult. The incident involving the rape occurred on July 31.
Authorities have not released the inmate’s name.

Ex-deputy booked with smuggling items into jail
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A former deputy sheriff accused of smuggling contraband into Orleans Parish Prison has been arrested.
Sheriff Marlin Gusman says former deputy Evelyn Tureaud, who resigned Oct. 1 amid an internal investigation, was arrested Saturday and booked with introducing contraband into a prison.
Tureaud was arrested in Jefferson Parish on a warrant obtained by the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.
She was booked on 14 counts of introducing contraband into a penal institution and malfeasance.
It was unclear whether Tureaud has an attorney.

Caregiver accused of stealing from disabled woman
LOCKPORT (AP) — Lafourche Parish sheriff’s deputies say a caregiver has been arrested after a Lockport woman reported that cash was stolen from her home.
Reba Yates, 27, of Gheens, was charged with exploitation of the infirmed.
Deputies say Yates took money from the victim’s purse while assisting her. They say Yates was hired last month as a contracted caretaker for the woman, who was injured several years ago.
Yates was released from the Lafourche Parish jail Thursday night after posting a $500 bond.

Prairieville man accused in road rage incident
PRAIRIEVILLE (AP) — Deputies say a 33-year-old Prairieville man is accused of attempted murder after repeatedly ramming his SUV into his estranged wife’s car, causing a three-car accident that injured six people.
Ascension Parish deputies say Gerald Asay, who had his infant child in the back seat of his vehicle, spotted his estranged wife about 2:30 p.m. Saturday and started following her as she drove with a male passenger on U.S. 61 in Prairieville.
Maj. Ward Webb said it was unclear whether Asay had been looking for them.
Webb says Asay was booked with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of negligent injuring, aggravated criminal damage to property and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
It was unclear whether he has an attorney.

Bruise leads to arrests of ex-’Sons of Guns’ stars
DENHAM SPRINGS (AP) — Two stars of the canceled reality TV series “Sons of Guns” face criminal charges arising from the alleged striking of a 9-year-old.
Kristafor Ford was booked in Livingston Parish on a charge of cruelty to a juvenile. His wife, Stephanie Hayden, was booked as a principal to the crime.
Warrants allege that Ford struck Hayden’s son with a belt, causing a large bruise on his buttocks. Hayden’s warrant says she was present when it happened. Friday’s arrests followed a complaint filed by the boy’s father.
The Denham Springs couple was released from the Livingston Parish jail on $25,000 bond each. Their contact information was unavailable.
“Sons of Guns” was canceled after another of its stars, Hayden’s father Will Hayden, was charged with rape. He remains jailed in Baton Rouge.
