Local JROTC cadets attend camp at Camp Beauregard

The United States Army’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, or JROTC, is designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork and self-discipline.
Its focus is reflected in its mission statement, “To motivate young people to be better citizens.” Participation in a JROTC program does not require military service in college or beyond. However, students who are interested in military careers have been able to use their experience at Franklin Senior High to successfully obtain ROTC scholarships for college.
Students from Franklin Senior High School, West St. Mary High School and Centerville High School attended the Junior Cadet Leadership Camp held at Camp Beauregard, Pineville June 15-19.
This one-week camp also included students from numerous Louisiana high schools. There were a variety of challenging activities, classes and games were offered to all cadets.
The purpose of the JCLC camp is to provide leadership opportunities, adventure and team building training through participation in a wide variety of activities. These activities included classes, leadership and team building tasks, physical fitness, company and platoon drill, drown proofing, rappelling and games.
The cadets form bonds through group activities and learn numerous life skills by participating in challenging tasks, games and courses.
Attending local cadets were Lanie Daigle, Alaina Hebert, Roderick Dominick, Jared Chavis, Joshua Rojas, Shatanica Gibson, Mariah Durocher and Joseph Romero. Roderick Dominick received two first place awards in the physical fitness competition.
