Sheriff warns of telephone scam

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert is warning of a new telephone scam in the area.
According to Hebert a caller claims to be a sheriff’s detective and claims that the recipient of the call has warrants for their arrest due to a defaulted loan.
In at least one case, the caller had somehow obtained the victim’s Social Security number and demanded money.
Hebert reminds residents never to give any personal information over the telephone.
