Central Catholic has smooth opening day

The first day of classes at Central Catholic in Morgan City started with a full house of students, Principal Vic Bonnaffee said.
Central Catholic began school Monday for 10th-grade through 12th-grade, and today for seventh-grade through ninth-grade.
“Yesterday went very smoothly. It went so smooth, we did not have to have an end-of-the-day assembly to talk about any difficulties or issues as to what’s going on,” Bonnaffee said.
Every student in 10th- through 12th-grade who was enrolled showed up to the first day of classes Monday, Bonnaffee said. As of this morning, every seventh- through ninth-grade student enrolled had been accounted for, he said.
Bonnaffee was excited that everyone made it to school “during these tough financial times,” he said.
Each year, school officials target to have 220 students in seventh-grade through 12th-grade, and, as of this morning, 221 students had enrolled, Bonnaffee said.
At the start of each school year, school leaders always make some minor adjustments to the day-to-day routine, what they want to do in the community and expectations in regard to discipline, he said.
“The big thing is, is that we still follow our mission statement, which says that we are a Catholic, Christian school,” Bonnaffee said. “We still strive for academic excellence to meet the core curriculum and have all of our students prepared for when they graduate. And we still strive to be able to involve our students in extra and co-curricular activities at all times.”
St. Mary Parish public schools and the first-grade through sixth-grade at Holy Cross Elementary started classes Thursday. Pre-K and kindergarten classes at Holy Cross begin Monday. Emmanuel Christian School in Morgan City will start classes Wednesday.
