St. Mary Parish joins in Voter Registration Week

=St. Mary Parish Registrar of Voters Jolene Holcombe joins registrars across Louisiana to host Voter Registration Week Aug. 31 through Sept. 4. Activities are planned for registering eligible citizens to vote.
Parish employees from the registrar of voters’ office will be registering all interested 17- and 18-year-olds in local high schools.
Applications and voter education materials are being distributed to “four sites for senior citizens in the parish,” said Joni Ronsonet, St. Mary Parish chief deputy to the registrar of voters. Senior centers are located in Franklin, Morgan City and Patterson.
“Louisiana was one of the first states in the nation to implement an easy, convenient online voter registration portal,” said Holcombe in a press release.
“Citizens with a valid Louisiana driver’s license can register online 24 hours a day, seven days a week from the convenience of their home or office by visiting the Secretary of State’s website.”
Residents can register in person at the parish registrar’s office, applying or renewing driver’s license at office of motor vehicles, obtaining services at public assistance agencies, and armed recruitment forces recruitment offices.
To register and vote in Louisiana individuals must be:
—A U.S. citizen.
—At least 17 years old to register and 18 before the next election.
—Not under an order of imprisonment for conviction of felony.
—Not under a judgment of full interdiction for mental incompetence or partial interdiction with suspension of voting rights.
—A resident in the state and parish in which the applicant seeks to register and vote.
The gubernatorial primary in Louisiana will be Oct. 24. The last day to register is Wednesday, Sept. 23, Holcombe said.
Early voting for the primary will be from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Oct. 10-17 at both St. Mary registrar of voters’ offices, Holcombe said.
The general election is scheduled for Nov. 21. The last day to register for that election is and the last day to register to vote is Oct. 21.
