Morgan City to face Sophie B. Wright Friday

In just its second game of the 2015 season, Morgan City High School hopes to equal its win total of a year ago when it hosts Sophie B. Wright Friday.
What the Tigers hope not to do is repeat last week’s performance where the Tigers were assessed 21 penalties for 220 yards, including several roughing-the-passer flags.
Morgan City coach Scott Tregle talked the most about penalties when noting what his team needed to improve upon from week 1’s 26-7 victory against Berwick.
Tregle said he reviewed the tape, and he said about half the penalties he didn’t agree with.
However, Tregle said he did agree with some of the roughing-the-passer penalties and his team was instructed during the contest to tackle lower.
Still, he said he asked the referee for clarification later in the game concerning what his team was doing wrong when he said his team was tackling the quarterback in a manner he didn’t see as malicious as he was releasing the ball.
While the game was marred by penalties, the Tigers did some good things on defense and offense.
Defensively, Morgan City limited Berwick to 111 yards total offense, including -22 rushing.
Berwick’s top two receivers, Kenan Jones and Audwin Williams, were kept out of the end zone.
Although they totaled just 235 yards of offense, the Tigers had 189 yards of that on the ground, led by Malik Phillips’ 12 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown. Kedrick Scott added 15 carries for 43 yards, while Ethan Scioneaux had five carries for 32 yards. Clifton Escort scored the Tigers’ other rushing touchdown.
Through the air, quarterback Abram Hartley completed 2-of-7 passes for 46 yards and a score.
Makye Richard led Morgan City’s receivers with two receptions for 35 yards and a score.
Morgan City’s opponent this week, Sophie B. Wright, enters week 2 at 1-0 as well, as they defeated Crescent City 42-18 in week 1.
Tregle said the visitors from New Orleans run spread on offense along with some other things and they look for big plays.
Players to watch on offense include Kevin Johnson and Daijon Landry.
Tregle said Sophie B. Wright has a lot of speed on offense, noting the school was Class 2A state runner-up in track and field a year ago. While their offensive line looks big on film, he hopes his defense can take advantage of their knack for not sticking with their blocks for that long.
Among the things Sophie B. Wright runs on offense are spread and they throw a lot of bubble screens, while Tregle said they also “run zone.”
On defense, Wright runs a 4-2-5 look.
“They’re going to keep eight in the box, which we’ve been having that so our guys know how to deal with that,” Tregle said. “We just got to block them. We got to block and we got to run and hit the holes and control the clock.”
