'Battle on the Basin' is this weekend in Morgan City

Deep South Racing Association will make its annual stop in Morgan City for its world finals in outboard drag boat racing this weekend.
The event, dubbed the “Battle on the Basin,” will be held Saturday and Sunday at Russo’s Landing in Morgan City.
The event is the last of five stops in the organization’s circuit this season.
This weekend’s racing is expected to bring 40 to 50 boats competing in the following classes: Lake Racer, Modified Production, Super Stock, Super Comp, Pro Stock, Pro Gas and Outlaw.
In addition to Louisiana, racers are expected from Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Texas.
The circuit has approximately 10 area racers, including Todd Catrett, Paul Gauthreau, Josh Broussard, Jay Aucoin, Scott Alleman and Kerry Sevin.
Racing will continue during inclement weather as long as no lightning, torrential rains or strong winds are present.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Morgan City Volunteer Fire Department. According to the department, the event is a major fundraiser for its organization.
Admission is $10 per person for adults, while those ages 12 and under will be charged $5. Those ages 6 and under will be admitted free. Ice chests may be brought for $10 per day per ice chest.
Concession and souvenirs will be sold.
Complimentary shuttle service will be held for those parking at the Lake Palourde lot to the racing venue from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
This weekend also will be one of remembrance of Marvin Catrett and Blake Melancon. Marvin Catrette, who was key in getting the “Battle of the Basin” started in Morgan City, died a year ago. He and his son, Todd Catrett, had been setting up boats and outboards for racing for many years earning them the name “Team Evolution Racing Camp.”
Meanwhile, Melancon, a standout local racer, passed away earlier this year.
