West St. Mary Wolfpack turn back Sacred Heart Trojans

BALDWIN _ West St. Mary’s defensive unit sparked led the Wolfpack t a 12-6 District 5-2A victory over the Sacred Heart Trojans here Thursday at Wolfpack Stadium.
WSM Coach C. J. Armelin applauded the effort of his defensive unit.
“Our defense played an excellent game tonight,” he said. “This win was well-deserved and hard fought as we have worked real hard for it. There were some questionable calls of which we overcame to post our first home win in four seasons.”
West St. Mary (2-6, 2-3) broke open a scoreless tie early in the third quarter when Wayne Armelin set sail on a 39-yard scoring jaunt, giving the Wolfpack a 6-0 lead.
On the night, Armelin rushed 10 times for 100 yards and one touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, the Wolfpack stretched its lead to 12-6 when quarterback Scottie Gray found Tristian Harris on a 20-yard TD pass.
Sacred Heart’s lone touchdown came late in the fourth quarter when Seth Shipp hauled in an 8-yard TD reception from Sam Tuminaro.
West St. Mary’s defense dashed any hopes Sacred Heart had of pulling out a last-second win with a terrific defensive stand. On a crucial third down play, WSM’s Deaquan Johnson and Theron Alexander sacked quarterback Tuminaro forcing the Trojans to try a fourth down. Then on fourth down, West St. Mary’s defense again rose to the occasion, pinning Tuminaro against the sideline while not allowing him to get a pass off with 52 seconds remaining in the contest. After the standout defensive play, the Wolfpack gained control, running out the clock and securing their second district win.
The Wolfpack defense limited the Trojans to 119 total yards with only 42 rushing yards and 77 passing yards.
West St. Mary gained 232 yards on the night, including 183 rushing and 49 passing.
Sacred Heart’s Garrick Fontenot led his team with 62 yards rushing on 13 attempts.
Armelin led the Wolfpack with 10 runs for 100 yards and one touchdown. Torrance Ballet ran eight times for 52 yards with Scottie Gray rushing nine times for 22 yards.
Gray completed 2 of 6 passes for 49 yards one one TD. Tuminar connected on 7 of 10 passes for 64 yards one one TD.
WSM’s Daylon Richard hauled in one pass for 29 yards while Tristian Harris made one catch for 20 yards and one TD.
West St. Mary (2-6, 2-3) will travel to take on the Delcambre Panthers Friday in District 5-2A action at 7 p.m.
