HMS premieres ‘God’s Favorite’ in renovated theater

Under the leadership of new Hanson Memorial High School Theatre Director Robin Shepherd, a small group of neophyte but talented and persevering actors has been hard at work rehearsing the first full-length play to christen their newly renovated performance space: the comedy “God’s Favorite” by Neil Simon.
The HMS warm and intimate proscenium theatre dates back to the school’s founding in 1925. Thanks to support from outside donors, the theater has been refurbished to include modernization of elements such as lighting and revisions to décor that still retain the grace, elegance, and artistry one might envision from that bygone era.
Senior Carl Taylor Stirling heads the cast as successful Long Island businessman Joe Benjamin, a modern-day “Job” with a demanding wife, ungrateful children and wise-cracking household employees.
Junior Trace Presley plays Sidney Lipton, a.k.a. “A Messenger from God” sent to inflame Joe’s life further by testing his faith (one classic scene involves chronic itching) and reporting back to “the Boss.”
Rounding out the cast and giving life to this fast-paced and hilarious but reverent take on the Book of Job are juniors Noel Baker (Morris), Chris Ibert (David Benjamin) and Isabella Mire (Rose Benjamin); sophomores Jacob Adams (Ben Benjamin) and Lexie Louviere (Mady); freshman Olivia Todd (Sarah Benjamin).
“God’s Favorite” runs Thursday and Saturday, Nov. 12-14 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. Admission is $10 for students and $15 for adults. For additional information, contact the Hanson Memorial Theatre Department at (337) 828-3487.
