MCHS earns top finish at tournament

The Morgan City High School boys’ soccer team won the Division III/IV crown of the Buffalo Wild Wings North-South Challenge in Lafayette.
The Tigers went undefeated in the tournament, knocking off Loyola Prep 1-0 Monday before winning two games Tuesday — a 3-0 victory against North Desoto and a 1-0 win against Evangel.
“We knew we had to win or even tie to take the title,” Morgan City Coach Trevor Patterson said of the Evangel contest.
The tournament format was set up for the top North teams in each division to square off against the top South teams with each playing three games, Patterson said. Patterson said the team with the highest point total won their division.
In Monday’s first game against Loyola Prep, the game was scoreless in the first half.
In the second half, Brayan Aleman recorded a break-away goal and the Tigers defense made it stand for the victory.
Against North Desoto, Aleman scored for the Tigers in the first half for a 1-0 halftime advantage for Morgan City.
Morgan City got two goals in the second half, one by Keny Valle-Ramos and another when Valadez, who was replaced at goalie by Edgar Calderon, scored the Tigers’ final goal.
Against Evangel, Aleman got the game’s lone goal in the first half.
“After that, we just sat back and contained Evangel,” Patterson said. “We had some great saves by Valadez, and our defense held strong.”
The Tigers (5-8-2 overall, 0-1 in District 6-III) along with the Lady Tigers (0-9-1, 0-1), will resume play Tuesday at home against Vandebilt Catholic. The girls will take the field at 5 p.m., followed by the boys at 7 p.m.
