Inmate accused of battery on officer

A 50-year-old Morgan City man was accused Tuesday of committing a battery on a police officer and damaging the Morgan City jail’s phone system, Police Chief James Blair said in a news release.
—Stephen Cortez, 50, of Second Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday on the charges of battery on a police officer and criminal damage to property.
Cortez, who was already incarcerated in the Morgan City jail, was booked on additional charges of criminal damage to property and battery on a police officer. Officers approached Cortez’ cell in regard to Cortez allegedly damaging the phone system inside the jail facility.
During the encounter, Cortez committed a battery on one of the officers involved. Cortez was jailed.
Blair reported the following arrests:
—Carlise Grogan, 25, of Sixth Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 3:41 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant charging him with failure to appear for theft and a warrant for probation violation.
Officers located Grogan on Sixth Street and arrested him. Grogan was jailed.
—Dantrell I. Garrett Jr., 27, of Victor II Boulevard in Morgan City, was arrested at 5:27 p.m. Wednesday on the charge of resisting an officer by giving false information and on warrant charging him with failure to signal, driving under suspension, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance laws.
Officers located Garrett on Victor II Boulevard and arrested him on warrants. Garrett had given officers a false name in an attempt to hide his true identity and avoid the arrest. The warrants stem from a narcotics division investigation into a January incident. Narcotics detectives conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for failing to use a turn signal, and Garrett was identified as the driver.
Garret had a suspended driver’s license and he was found to be in possession of suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia within the area of a drug-free zone. The suspected marijuana was sent to a crime lab for analysis and was later positively identified as marijuana. Garrett was jailed.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported responding to 54 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—Wayne Clark, 44, of James Street in Siracusaville, was arrested at 9:58 p.m. Wednesday on the charges of no turn signal, improper lane usage and possession of a schedule II narcotic. Narcotics division detectives patrolling the Morgan City area observed a vehicle traveling on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The vehicle initiated a left turn without signaling and then crossed over the center line on several occasions. Detectives conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Clark. During the stop, a search of the vehicle was conducted. Detectives located a bottle containing four Oxycodone pills. Clark was jailed with no bail set.
—Charles Pollard, 42, of Camille Drive in Patterson, was arrested at 3 p.m. Wednesday for operating a vehicle with no insurance. A deputy patrolling the Bayou Vista area responded to a report of a crash on Southeast Boulevard and Saturn Road.
During the crash investigation, the deputy made contact with an involved driver, Pollard. Pollard was unable to provide any vehicle insurance. Pollard was ultimately released on a summons to appear in court Oct. 17.
—Tayler Davis, 18, of Franklin Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 3:56 p.m. Wednesday on the charge of remaining where forbidden.
A deputy assigned to patrol the Patterson area responded to a call on Natalie Lane. During the course of the investigation, the deputy learned that Davis entered a home he was previously banned from. Davis was jailed and later released on a summons to appear in court Oct. 17.
—Kaci Henry, 28, of Hilda Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 12:26 a.m. today on a warrant for failing to appear in court on charges of no insurance, no taillight and suspended driver’s license.
A deputy assisting the Morgan City Police Department on a traffic stop on Brashear Avenue came into contact with Henry. During the encounter, the deputy learned of the active warrant for her arrest. Henry was jailed and released on $2,000 bail.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
