Assumption sheriff runs camp for kids

NAPOLEONVILLE – Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon’s first Recreational Program session is underway. The event is being run through Monday at the Belle Rose Middle School.
There are over 300 youth in attendance at the two-week camp, and Falcon hopes to see those numbers increase in future years.
The ages of participation range from 5 to 16.
There are 5 age groups which allow counselors the opportunity to focus on each child’s individual needs and allows for each group to have subject matter compatible to their respective ages.
Sheriff Falcon believes that the program is very important in that it gives the kids the opportunity to learn from what it has to offer. Furthermore, the event is held in the summer while school is out and for those two-weeks, the children are not exposed to negative outside influences.
The camp has many focuses, including life skills, athletics, arts and crafts, computer instruction, music, movie time and numerous other subjects which will benefit the children in the future.
The program is directed by Capt. Rodney Rhodes and Lt. Phillip August along with numerous other sheriff’s office employees and civilian volunteers who act as counselors to insure that the children get the most knowledge as possible from the experience and do it safely.
Falcon thanks all of the sheriff’s office employees and civilian counselors, the Assumption Parish School Board, the Assumption Parish Police Jury and all other individuals and sponsors who contribute to the success of the program.
Sheriff Falcon hopes to expand the session to accommodate every area of the parish in the future.
