Zephyrs defeat Cubs 9-5
Tomas Telis homered and drove in four runs, and the New Orleans Zephyrs rode a six-run third inning past the Iowa Cubs, 9-5, during Tuesday night action.
Six different Zephyrs collected two hits in a 15-hit attack, and Pedro Ciriaco was the only position player to go hitless. New Orleans also scored nine runs and had 13 hits on Monday in Oklahoma City.
The Z’s sent 11 batters to the plate in the third, starting with Isaac Galloway’s leadoff double. Dee Gordon erased an early 1-0 deficit with an RBI-single, and Robert Andino put the Zephyrs in front with a one-out single.
Matt Juengel followed with a double to score Gordon, and Telis and Galloway delivered RBI-singles as the Zephyrs equaled their highest-scoring inning at home this season.
Juan Perez slugged a three-run homer in the fourth to bring the Cubs within 6-4, but Telis blasted his fourth home run of the year an inning later as New Orleans regained a four-run cushion.
The teams traded runs in the sixth, with Jeimer Candelario lacing a solo homer to center field, only for Gordon to lead off the bottom of the frame with a single, steal second and score on Andino’s double.
Justin Nicolino (5-4) scattered seven hits across 51/3 innings and yielded five runs — four earned — to pick up the victory. Jo-Jo Reyes struck out three in 22/3 innings of no-hit relief, and Brian Ellington worked around a pair of ninth-inning singles to strike out the side.
Jake Buchanan (9-6) was charged with six runs — five earned — on seven hits in four innings to suffer the loss.
The Zephyrs and I-Cubs continue the series at 6 p.m. today.
