Man charged with injuring bicyclist in crash

A 27-year-old Berwick man has been charged with the negligent injuring of a bicyclist he struck with his SUV in May on La. 70 in Morgan City, Police Chief James Blair said in a news release.
—Jason L. Smith, 27, of Point Pleasant Drive in Berwick, was arrested at 9:54 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging him with negligent injuring.
Smith turned himself in to the Morgan City Police Department stemming from a May 5 incident in which Smith was involved in a vehicle crash with a bicycle on La. 70.
Morgan City police received a report at 5:59 p.m. May 5 of a crash involving a cyclist on La. 70 near Lake End Park between the judges’ stand and Carillon Tower.
Investigators determined that a Chevy Tahoe SUV driven by Smith veered onto the shoulder of the roadway and struck a cyclist, Clay Leonard of Berwick.
Leonard was airlifted to a Baton Rouge hospital to be treated for his injuries, police said. Both the Tahoe and bicycle were traveling south on La. 70.
The results of a toxicology test showed Smith wasn’t intoxicated at the time of the crash. Smith was jailed.
Blair reported the following arrests:
—Allison Lacombe, 51, of Springfield, was arrested at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday on the charge of disturbing the peace use of offensive language.
—Kasha Cordova, 48, of Maryland Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday on the charge of simple battery.
Officers were dispatched to a business on Fifth Street in regard to a disturbance. Officers arrived and spoke with Lacombe. Lacombe stated that she came to the business to pick up money owed to her by Cordova. Lacombe and Cordova got into a verbal altercation that escalated when Cordova struck Lacombe in the facial area, Blair said.
Officers located Cordova, and she admitted to striking Lacombe. While officers were conducting the investigation, Lacombe used profanities and was asked several times to stop, but continued. Both Lacombe and Cordova were jailed.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported responding to 26 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—Bryce J. Tabor, 21, of Hendricks Street in Patterson, was arrested at 1:19 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging him with stalking.
The warrant was obtained following an investigation into a report of harassment. The detective assigned to the case found evidence that Tabor threatened a woman’s life and the lives of others multiple times via text message. Tabor was transported from the Lafayette Parish jail to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center on the warrant. No bail is set.
—Ronald Johnson, 25, of Saturn Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 6:33 p.m. Tuesday on the charge of domestic abuse battery in the presence of juveniles.
A deputy investigating a report of a domestic disturbance gathered evidence that Johnson grabbed a female victim’s arm during an argument. Johnson was holding a small child at the time of the physical encounter. Johnson was jailed with no bail set.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrests:
—Brittany Loupe, 26, of Main Street in Patterson, was arrested at 1:58 p.m. Tuesday on the charge of simple battery involving domestic violence. No bail is set yet.
—Devin Parvino, 27, of Main Street in Patterson, was arrested at 1:58 p.m. Tuesday on the charge of simple criminal damage to property over $500. No bail is set yet.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrest:
—Jerry Percle, 48, of Canton Street in Berwick, was arrested at 8:46 a.m. Tuesday on a 16th Judicial District Court warrant for failure to appear on the charge of littering. Percle posted $300 bail.
