Walk to support first responders

Staff Report

Tri-City area football teams will walk Thursday evening from Berwick to Morgan City to show support for law enforcement officials and other first responders in the area. A social event will follow the walk at Lawrence Park.
The Morgan City, Berwick, Patterson and Central Catholic high school football teams put together a walk in support of all first responders in the community. Players will start at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Berwick Elementary and will walk to Lawrence Park in Morgan City.
The Berwick Town Council approved a parade permit during Tuesday’s council meeting for the walk.
“This is completely, 100 percent about getting the kids involved with the police and the fire (personnel) and make sure they trust each other,” organizer Lee Dragna said.
All first responders from the area and their families are invited to the event. Dragna expects 1,000 people to attend.
Players are expected to finish the walk and arrive at the park between 7 and 7:15 p.m., organizer Charlie Solar said. If bad weather occurs, officials will move the event under the U.S. 90 bridge in Morgan City.
Players will release 500 blue balloons at the park in honor of law enforcement, Dragna said. A DJ will be at the park along with band Deja Vu.
Food and drinks will be provided as well. Each school will have someone cooking jambalaya at the park, Solar said.
